Biography

Vera Spencer was born in Prague, moved to England in 1936 and studied at the Slade School of Art and Central School of Textile Design in London (1946-49). She participated actively in the Post-War abstract movement, exhibiting alongside artists such as Jean Arp, Sonia Delauney, Adrian Heath, Terry Frost, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Roger Hilton at some of the foremost London galleries, including Gimpel Fils, Redfern Gallery and Artists’ International Association amongst others. She also exhibited widely on the continent in the 1950s. Her work was included in many of the most important shows of abstract art of the period including ‘Collages and Objects’ at the ICA (1954); ‘Artist versus Machine’ at the Building Centre, London (1954); ‘Collages’ at the Palais des Beaux Arts, Paris, 1954; ‘Group Espace’ at the Royal Festival Hall (1955); and ‘International Collage Exhibition’ at the Rose Fried Gallery, New York (1956). In 2007 a major solo exhibition ‘Paintings and Collages 1950s-1960s’ was held at Paisnel Gallery, London.
