Painter, designer, teacher. Educated at Charterhouse, Tunnard then studied textile design at Royal College of Art 1919-23. During the 1920s he played jazz semi-professionally and was also a textile designer for Tootal Braodhurst Lee, 1923-9. Three paintings were exhibited at the RA in 1931 and a one-man show at the Redfern Gallery in 1933. Tunnard exhibited in the Surrealist section in AIA exhibition in 1937. After serving with the Coast Guard during WWII Tunnard took the post of art master at Wellington College; then from 1948 taught at Penzance School of Art for many years. Tunnard designed a mural for the Festival of Britain in 1951. The RA held a retrospective of his work in 1977; a further retrospective was held by Henry Dyson at Grey College, University of Durham, 2000. Tate Gallery, British Council and many provincial and overseas galleries hold Tunnard's pictures.
