Lugano, Switzerland. 1959
Phoebus Tuttnauer, a painter and draughtsman who began to work in a primitive style in the mid-50s. Born in Austria, he studied at the University of Vienna and became a plastic surgeon. Moved to Britain in 1938, where he lived in London and studied art. Mixed exhibition appearances included London Art Gallery, Royal Academy, O’Hana Gallery, and also galleries in Spain and France. He had solo exhibitions at Brod and Arthur Jeffress Galleries and Ben Uri, 1959. Tate Gallery holds his pen self-portrait of that year in its archive.
