Biography

Painter, draughtswoman and sculptor, born in 1908 in Portobello, near Edinburgh. After attending boarding school in England, Wood in the mid-1920s spent a winter in Florence, where she underwent academic education at the studio of Mafori Seveni. Returning to Edinburgh, she studied at Edinburgh College of Art with William Gillies and D M Sutherland, followed by a short period of sculpture under Alexander Carrick and further studies in Paris with Andre Lhoté. After marrying Kenneth Maclay, a stockbroker, in 1939, she holidayed abroad including France where she met Picasso, a notable influence.

From the 1940s she showed with the RSA and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; also with three bodies of which she was a member: SSA, SSWA and Glasgow Society of Women Artists. Scottish Arts Council sponsored a solo show at Citizen’s Theatre, Glasgow, in 1970. Another followed at Lillie Art Gallery, Milngavie, Glasgow, near where she had a studio, in 1979. Further exhibitions included England & Co, 1989. Scottish Arts Council and Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow, hold her work.
