Biography

A painter, artist in collage and teacher, Furness studied at Wimbledon School of Art, with John Ward and Gerald Cooper, and at the University of London. She lived in Cornwall from 1957 to 1966, painting and exhibiting regularly. She was a member of the Penwith Society of Artists and served on the executive committee with Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach & Terry Frost. Her first solo show was at the Oxford Gallery, Oxford in 1963. Dozens of other exhibitions followed including one at the Penwith Gallery, St Ives, alongside Winifred Nicholson in 1980; solo shows at Penlee House Museum, Penzance (1989); Wills Lane Gallery, St Ives (from 1990); Nina Zborowska, Painswick (1991-5); Beatrice Royal Gallery, Southampton (1994-95), and several in London. She has shown regularly at the RWA including a solo show in 2004. She taught in the illustration department at Falmouth College of Art for six years until retiring.
