Biography
Painter and wood engraver. Hughes-Stanton studied at the Byam Shaw School 1919-21, the RA Schools and under Leon Underwood, who had a school in Hammersmith, 1921-4. The son of Sir Herbert Hughes-Stanton, he married fellow artist Gertrude Hermes. After illustrating T.E. Lawrence's 'The Seven Pillars of Wisdom' Hughes-Stanton became best known as a designer, illustrator and producer of fine books, for the Golden Cockerel and Cresset presses, for the Gregynog Press, 1930-33, and for his own Gemini Press, 1933-36. He was seriously wounded as a POW during the Second World War. Post-war he taught at Westminster School of Art 1947-8 and from 1948 Hughes-Stanton was a lecturer in printmaking and drawing at the Society of Wood Engravers, St. Martins and The Central School of Art.
