Biography

Painter. Born Knowsley, near Liverpool. After initial attempts at studying medicine and architecture, in 1921 he went to Paris and enrolled at the Académie Julian. Became a friend of Jose Antonio de Gandarillas and with him travelled through Europe, and North Africa and Greece. Returning to France he enjoyed friendships with Picasso and Cocteau. 1924 exhibited at Heals, in London, and 1925 at the Redfern Gallery, with Paul Nash. 1926 met Ben and Winifred Nicholson and painted with them in St.Ives Cornwall, where he met Alfred Wallis whom he befriended. Became a member of the 7 & 5 Society and practised the faux-naïf style associated with this exhibiting group.
