Apple of Sodom refers to a fruit of the gigantic tree which is alleged to have grown on the site of the destroyed cities of Sodom & Gomorrah (Genesis 18-19), the apples of which were externally of fair appearance but, when plucked, would dissolve into smoke and ashes.
